Amelia Bird: Art, Design, Trends

Hello…

And welcome. After years of work being scattered across Instagram, LinkedIn and my childhood bedroom, I’ve brought it all to one place. I’m excited to share with you — nameless visitor — my past, present and future projects. All in one deliciously Christmas Carol fashion. 

I graduated with a Fine Art degree with a year in industry in 2024, after starting my degree in September 2020, I got off to a less than ideal start to my journey (a global pandemic…). Nevertheless, I loved my time at uni. I loved the crits, the late night painting and the painstaking white paint for exhibition that shrouded my final months of my last year.

Throughout my time at Uni however, I had a longing to connect more with people. I undertook a year in industry in merchandising and buying at TJX Europe, or Tkmaxx as it is better known, and loved how it felt to work with others. Through my degree I always attempted to make work that people connected to, related to, and in some way to relate in the shared experience of life together, the messy imperfect emotions and fantastic highs. 

I will be the first to admit when I sat my GSCE maths exam in 2018, I was glad to see the back of maths… or so I thought. So when I started my placement year and found that maths had once again reared its ungainly head I was conflicted. After months of relearning and patching up my failed relationship with numbers, I slowly regained my confidence and found something startling. I actually quite like maths. More importantly it had supported a greater love that was unearthed that year. I love fashion.
Love. Sweaty palms on Pinterest, baited breath at Met Gala photos, feverish at gallery collections. Love.

I’ve always liked fashion, from young adulthood of searching through ‘pay the weight’ vintage kilo sales where I’d collect up black batwing velvet mini dresses, silky red paisley scarves and moth bitten ecru tees. But I’d always focused on the arts, neglecting the most owned, explored and traded art: clothing. 

So this leads me to the conclusion of this introduction article. I not only love clothing and fashion but I love connection. Every trend, every thread, every colour links us, our history, culture, interests, religion, past, likes, dislikes, opinions of ourselves and how we want others to view us.
